If you ask us, the best place to propose in Greece is Santorini. The caldera cliffs, the whitewashed villages and the famous sunset make the whole island feel like it was built for exactly this moment. That said, Mykonos, Milos, Nafplio, the Athens Riviera and Crete are all wonderful in their own way, and below we'll give you an honest look at each one. Why is Santorini the best place to propose in Greece?
Santorini is a volcano. The villages of Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira sit right on the rim of the caldera, hundreds of meters above the Aegean, and almost every terrace, path and rooftop faces west towards the sunset. No other island in Greece lets the scenery do this much of the work for you.
It also gives you real options. You can propose on a quiet cliff path in Imerovigli with the Blue Domes behind you, at a private waterfront venue by the Old Port of Fira, out on the caldera aboard a catamaran, or down by the black sand beaches of Perissa and Perivolos. One practical thing people forget: in summer the sunset is usually around 8 in the evening, and the whole island quietly arranges itself around it. Dinner reservations, photographers, even the light on the white walls. When the main event of your trip is a question at golden hour, that rhythm helps a lot.
What about Mykonos?
Mykonos is the glamorous one. Beach clubs, famous DJs, boutique shopping, dinners that somehow turn into parties without anyone deciding it. Little Venice at sunset is genuinely lovely, with the waves hitting the old captains' houses and the windmills up on the hill. If your partner's dream trip involves dancing until sunrise, Mykonos will not disappoint.
For the proposal itself, the island is less about scenery and more about atmosphere. In our experience it shines when the question is one part of a bigger celebration week with friends, rather than the quiet centerpiece of the trip.
Santorini or Mykonos: which one should you pick?
Honest answer: it depends what the trip is about.
If the proposal is the centerpiece, choose Santorini. The caldera gives you a backdrop that makes every photo look almost unreal, the evenings are calmer, and everything builds naturally towards that sunset hour. If the trip is about celebrating loudly, with beach clubs and nightlife, choose Mykonos, it does that better than anywhere else in Greece.
And plenty of couples simply do both. The two islands are connected by ferry in season, usually a ride of two or three hours, so you can propose on the caldera first and then take the ring to the dance floor. That order works much better than the reverse, trust us on this one!
Which other places in Greece deserve a look?
Greece has hundreds of islands plus a mainland full of history, so this list could go on forever. These are the ones couples ask us about most:
- The Athens Riviera. City and coast in one trip. Rooftop dinners with the Acropolis lit up behind you, and about an hour down the coast the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio catches the sunset over the open sea. Good for couples who want museums in the morning and salt water in the afternoon.
- Nafplio. A small seaside town in the Peloponnese with Venetian fortresses, bougainvillea alleys and a very romantic old town. Quiet and elegant, and easy to reach from Athens by car.
- Milos. Wild volcanic beaches, including the white moonscape rocks of Sarakiniko. Fewer crowds, more adventure. Lovely if the two of you like exploring by rented boat or jeep.
- Crete. The biggest Greek island, so it has a bit of everything: the old Venetian harbour of Chania, mountain villages, long sandy beaches. You could honeymoon there for a month and not repeat a day.
All beautiful. None of them, in our slightly biased opinion, gives the ring the stage that the caldera does.
So why do we only work in Santorini?
Because doing one island properly beats doing five islands halfway. Since 1996 we've learned which terraces catch the wind after six, which paths fill with day-trippers at exactly the wrong minute, which venues actually look like their photos, and which rooftops need a permission nobody mentions until you're standing there with a ring in your pocket.

What is the best time of year to propose in Greece?
In our experience May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot: warm evenings, long sunsets, fewer crowds than midsummer. July and August are beautiful too, just hotter and busier. High season in Santorini runs May to October.
Do you plan proposals outside Santorini?
