How to Propose in Santorini, Step by Step

Proposing in Santorini comes down to five decisions: when you'll do it, where you'll stand, which details you'll build around the moment, how you'll keep it secret, and what you'll actually say on one knee. Get those five right and the island takes care of the rest. We are the Sirigos family, we've been planning marriage proposals here since 1996, and below is the exact way we walk every couple through it.

Step 1: Which month, and what time of day?

Start with the calendar, because everything else hangs on it. High season runs May to October, and during those months the famous sunset lands at around 8PM, which is usually the sweet spot for the question itself. May, June and September give you warm evenings without the biggest crowds of July and August. Winter proposals happen too, quieter and moodier, but plan for wind and a jacket.

One small tip couples always thank us for: propose on the second day of your stay, not the first. Jetlag is real and you want clear eyes for this. If you want the full month-by-month picture, we wrote a whole guide on the best time to propose in Santorini.

Step 2: Where will you ask? Choose your setting

This is the fun part. Santorini gives you five very different stages, and there's no wrong answer, only the one that sounds like the two of you.

A caldera terrace at sunset. The classic. Our Adventurous Proposal Package starts with a casual photoshoot around the Blue Domes of Imerovigli, then ends at a peaceful spot overlooking the caldera just as the sun goes down. Your partner thinks it's a photo tour. It isn't.

A private dinner by the water. We work with the AION venue at the Old Port of Fira, the only waterfront venue on the island, facing the volcano and the sunset. Our private dinner proposal package comes with your own waiter, a gazebo with white curtains, and a heart of candles waiting when you arrive.

A catamaran deck. Five hours of private sailing with stops at the Red Beach, the volcano and the hot springs, and the question popped out on the Aegean with nobody around except your photographer and the crew. That's our sunset boat proposal, the only all-inclusive package we offer.

A beach. The black sand of Perissa and Perivolos feels a world away from the caldera crowds. We can set up a dinner right on the sand, and yes, horse riding is a real option.

Your hotel suite or a private villa. Quiet, completely private, and it works beautifully. Wong proposed to Jen in their hotel room with a simple card that said "Turn Around", and they got married the same day under the hotel's gazebo. You can read their story here.

Step 3: Which details actually make the moment?

After all these years we know which extras get the biggest gasp. These are the ones we set up most often in season:

  • A heart made of 30 candles (windproof ones, because Santorini has opinions about wind)
  • Two or three handfuls of rose petals
  • A flower bouquet waiting at the spot
  • A speaker playing your song as you walk in, and later for a first dance
  • Fountain fireworks after sunset
  • A blindfold reveal, if you like a little drama
  • And always, always, a hidden photographer

Couples sometimes ask us about bigger ideas too. Arriving by helicopter is possible through our partner at santorinihelicoptertours.com, so if that sounds like you, ask us and we'll see what can be arranged for your date.

Let me tell you something, They're going to say YES! But why not do it so special that you'll remember it for the rest of your lives?

Step 4: How do you keep the proposal a secret?

The cover story does the heavy lifting. We book you a "photo tour", which is a completely normal thing to do in Santorini, so your partner expects a photographer, expects nice outfits, expects walking to pretty viewpoints. What they don't expect is the last stop. 100% of our proposals are total surprises, and the photo-tour trick is a big reason why.

A few practical things from our side. Keep our emails out of any shared inbox. Don't say the word "proposal" out loud at the hotel, walls are thin. And if carrying the ring around makes you nervous, tell us, we can plant it at the spot for you so it's waiting when you get there.

Step 5: The moment itself

Breathe. Really. By this point the setup is done, the photographer is in position and our representative is nearby, so nothing is left for you to organize.

Keep the speech short. Two or three sentences you actually mean will beat a memorized page every single time. When they say yes, and they will, take the ring out of the box before you slide it on, it photographs much better that way. Then comes the champagne, and it's good luck to drink the whole bottle. Really, I promise!

Questions couples ask us

How much does a Santorini proposal cost?

Our Adventurous Proposal Package starts from 950 euros, the private dinner proposal from 2,000 euros and the private catamaran proposal from 2,000 euros. The prices quoted don't include VAT, and there's no weekday or weekend price difference.

How far in advance should we book?

The earlier the better, especially for May to October. Santorini is a popular island and finding availability can be tricky sometimes, so the moment you know your travel dates, send us an email and we'll secure yours.

Can we get married the same day as the proposal?

Yes! Many couples propose and then marry the same day with a symbolic ceremony, on the beach, on the caldera or at their hotel. If you want the marriage to be legal, contact us in advance so we can prepare the wedding documents in time.

Has anyone ever said no?

Not under our watch! Nerves are completely normal, we see them every week. But nobody has said no to a proposal we planned in Santorini, and once the sunset does its thing, the answer takes care of itself.

That's the whole recipe. If you're ready to start, or even if you only have questions for now, send us a message through our contact page or write to us at info@santoriniproposals.com. Tell us who you two are and how you picture the moment, and we'll take it from there. Quietly, carefully, and with a lot of love.
