Here is our honest answer, after planning proposals on this island since 1996: the best time to propose in Santorini is late spring or early autumn — May, June and September are the months we would pick for our own children. The weather is warm and steady, the sunsets are glorious, and the island has energy without being packed. July and August are beautiful too, just hotter and much busier, so we plan those proposals a little more carefully.
But the truth is, there is no bad month to ask the love of your life to marry you here. It only changes how we plan it. Let us walk you through the year the way we see it from our office in Fira.
Spring (April to June) — the island wakes up
April is green, believe it or not — Santorini has a short season where the volcanic slopes soften and the light is gentle. It can still be cool in the evening, so we keep a jacket in the car. May is, for us, the single best month: warm days, quiet-ish paths, sea shining, everything open. June carries that momentum with longer days and sunset around 8:30 in the evening. If your dates are flexible, aim here.
Summer (July and August) — the famous season
This is Santorini at full volume. The sunset in Oia gathers a small crowd every single evening, the restaurants are full and the light is spectacular. Proposals absolutely work in high summer — hundreds happen every week — but the two of us will be sharing the island with many other couples. Our advice: book as early as you can, let us pick a quieter spot than the famous viewpoints, and think about a private catamaran cruise, because out on the water the crowd simply does not exist.
Autumn (September and October) — our quiet favourite
September is May's twin: warm sea, softer crowds, steady weather. Many of our couples who came in August and saw the crowds tell us later they wished they had come in September! October is calmer still — a light jacket for the evening, and sunsets that somehow feel deeper in colour. If you want the classic Santorini experience with breathing room, autumn is it.
Winter (November to March) — the island to yourselves
Winter Santorini is a different island, and we love it. Oia's paths are nearly empty, the light is clear, and a proposal feels wonderfully personal — no audience at all. It is cooler and the wind can be strong, so we plan winter proposals in the daytime and always have a cosy indoor backup ready. Fewer of the big venues are open, but the ones that are feel intimate in a way summer cannot match.
The month matters less than the moment. We have seen perfect proposals in August crowds and in January wind — because the plan fit the couple. From our family's experience
What about the time of day?
Sunset is the classic, and for good reason — in midsummer the sun goes down around 8PM and the hour before it (photographers call it golden hour) gives the softest, most flattering light you will ever be photographed in. Our sunset proposal page goes deeper into how we time it.
The secret alternative is sunrise. Same caldera, same colours in reverse, and almost nobody around. A few of our bravest couples have proposed at dawn and the photos are unreal. And daytime proposals — on a quiet beach, at a winery, in your hotel — are wonderfully relaxed, with no race against the light.
Questions couples ask us
What is the best month to propose in Santorini?
May, June or September, if you can choose freely. Reliable warmth, beautiful light, manageable crowds.
What time is the sunset?
Around 8PM in midsummer, earlier in the shoulder months. We always plan around the exact sunset time of your date.
Can you propose in winter?
Yes — quiet, personal and surprisingly photogenic. We plan it in daytime with a warm backup spot for the wind.
Sunset or sunrise?
Sunset for the classic dream, sunrise for total privacy. There is no wrong answer, only your answer.
Whenever you decide to come, tell us the month you are thinking about and we will tell you honestly what it will be like — and then we will plan a proposal that fits it perfectly. Have a look at our proposal packages, or simply send us an email. We answer personally, always.
