Imerovigli is the highest village on Santorini's caldera rim, and every evening it gets the same sunset as Oia with a fraction of the crowd. That is the honest answer we give when couples ask us where to propose if they want quiet. Add Skaros Rock, the old fortress headland that juts into the caldera just below the village, and you have a setting that feels enormous and private at the same time.
Why is Imerovigli our favourite village for a quiet proposal?
We are based in Fira, and Imerovigli is our neighbour, about half an hour's walk north along the caldera path. In our experience it is the calmest of the rim villages in the evening. Oia packs hundreds of people onto its castle walls every single sunset. Imerovigli mostly does not.
Because the village sits at the highest point of the rim, you look down over Skaros Rock, across the water to the volcano, and all the way up the coastline towards Oia. White paths, a few small churches with blue domes, and long stretches of railing where nobody is standing next to you. For a proposal, that last part is gold.

Can you propose on Skaros Rock?
Yes, and it is a special one. Skaros held a Venetian-era fortress centuries ago, and today it is a bare, dramatic headland you reach on foot. The walk starts with steps leading down from the edge of Imerovigli, and you should count roughly 45 to 60 minutes round trip depending on your pace and how many times you stop for photos. The way out is mostly downhill. Which means the way back is mostly uphill, so plan your outfit and your energy for that.
We repeat the same advice we give on our proposal tips and FAQ page: sneakers over high heels for any cliff walk on this island. A short honest packing list for the Skaros walk:
- Comfortable shoes, really, the steps are uneven in places
- Water in the summer months
- Something to keep your hair in place, the wind loves this headland
- The heels can wait in the bag for dinner afterwards
Out on the rock you have the caldera on both sides of you, and on the far side sits the tiny chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti. At sunset the light wraps around the whole headland. Most evenings you will share it with a handful of hikers instead of a few hundred phones.
Skaros Rock or the caldera path — where exactly should you stand?
Both work, and this is a decision we usually make together with you. If your partner enjoys a small adventure, proposing out on the rock itself is unforgettable, and the walk gives the moment a natural build-up. If a walk of 45 minutes or more sounds risky for your plan (nerves, heat, surprise timing), the viewpoints on the caldera path above the village give you the exact same panorama, with Skaros sitting in your photos instead of under your feet.
Plenty of couples combine them. Propose at a quiet viewpoint first, then walk out to Skaros afterwards for engagement pictures while the adrenaline is still working for you.
The sunset does not check whether you are standing in Oia or in Imerovigli. Same sun, same caldera, just without the crowd!
What about a private terrace or villa in Imerovigli?
If you want zero witnesses, Imerovigli has beautiful private options. Terraces and villas hang right over the caldera here, and we can set up a heart of candles, rose petals and your music before you two arrive. It is the same view as the public path, only for that evening it belongs entirely to you.
One warning from experience: do not assume you can use your hotel's rooftop just because it looks empty at sunset. Terraces belong to somebody, and permission has to be arranged in advance. When is the light best for an Imerovigli photoshoot?
In high summer the sun sets around 8pm, and the hour before that is the light photographers dream about. Imerovigli faces west over the caldera, so the whole village turns gold and the shadows go soft. For Skaros we time the walk so you are out on the headland comfortably before the sun touches the horizon, never rushing the steps in fading light.
Morning is the quiet secret. The caldera path is close to empty early in the day, the light is gentle, and couples who would rather not have any audience at all sometimes choose a morning proposal with a relaxed photoshoot after. How do we plan an Imerovigli proposal with you?

Questions couples ask us
Is Imerovigli really less crowded than Oia at sunset?
Yes, usually much less. Oia gathers big crowds at its castle every evening, while Imerovigli sees a steady trickle of walkers on the caldera path. The view is the same sun and the same caldera, from the highest village on the rim.
How long is the walk to Skaros Rock?
Roughly 45 to 60 minutes round trip from the edge of Imerovigli, with steps going down on the way out and up on the way back. Wear sneakers, carry water in summer, and leave enough time so nobody is hiking in the dark.
Can you set up candles and flowers on Skaros Rock itself?
We keep setups on the rock small and respectful, it is a public spot and the wind is real. A ring and that view do most of the work. For candle hearts, rose petals and music we usually suggest a private terrace or villa in Imerovigli instead.
Do we need permission to propose in Imerovigli?
On the public caldera path you simply need good timing and a plan for the photographer. Terraces, rooftops and villas are another story, they belong to someone, and arranging that access in advance is exactly what we do for you.
